Michael Jackson Had A Point
We really are the world...
October 10, 2011
Just yesterday, October 2, 2007, the Newport College hosted its first international dinner.
Needless to say, it was quite well-attended and there were very few leftovers. Food from 14 different countries (including the obvious favorites of China, Japan, Italy, Mexico, and India) was cooked delectably and authentically (no chicken and broccoli mixed in the Chinese food, for instance).
"This activity seems like just a good time, but it is of incredible importance, " Richard Williamson, president of Newport College, quotes. "This puts our core value of tolerance into practice."
"I'm proud that I can say that I go to a school that is so diverse, " boasts Sarah Chapman, a junior pre-med student. "Seeing things like this reminds me of what a blessing it is to have culture here, where it's lacking in other places.
That's good to hear, because another one of the school's core values is pride.
The international dinner was put together with the synergistic efforts of a few groups, such as Amnesty International, the Public Relations and Sociology Departments, The Chinese Club, and the Chess Club.
"We just wanted to eat some great food, " Ned Finkle, chess club member, admits. "It's not very often that I eat Ethiopian food. It was really great. I had a bad case of food coma afterwards since I overate, but it was worth every bite."
Williamson is happy with where this dinner is going. "This will not be the last one of these. Not even the last one this year. We need to remind the world that we here at Newport College are the world.
